This project is a great one for this time of year, as students can use their recent Halloween experience to think about what really makes them feel scared and why. Having students decide how to visually represent their fears makes this lesson rich and meaningful from the get go. In addition, letting students choose their own drawing media provides a sense of safety in what could be an emotional task.
If you have students working with a variety of drawing mediums, then you’ll also want to provide a variety of drawing surfaces. If you’re one of the first 1,500 registrants for the Winter 2016 Online Conference, you’ll have the chance to try out a plethora of choices from Canson via the ever-popular SWAG box. Just look at all that paper goodness.

Plus, if you’re looking for even more ways to get students thinking outside of their comfort zones, you can watch Timothy Bogatz’s presentation “Overcoming the Fear of Failure with Unexpected Studio Projects,” where he’ll explore many more great ideas. Hope to see you there!
