This project will become a hit in your classroom year after year. If you don’t have the space or budget to screen print, this project provides students with a similar process and look. Students love wearing and sharing their work, making the t-shirts a PR dream for your classroom. The lesson takes roughly 3-5 class periods depending on how intricate the stencils become. It’s a great project for the beginning or end of the year when the weather is nice.
If students want to create a light colored shirt, it’s very easy to modify the project. Instead of using bleach, use spray paint. Instead of cutting away the white areas of their stencils, students cut away the black areas.
Whichever process you use, be sure students are aware that “islands” in their designs will fall out. These are areas in which shapes are completely surrounded by the opposite color. Students can work with stencils like this, but sometimes it’s easier to modify the stencil so students only have one solid piece of paper to worry about.
