I use these Tool Drawings as our first “real” project after we work on realism in my Drawing I class. We’ve already practiced shading, detail, and precision in other lessons and sketchbook assignments, and this is the project that ties them all together. I like to show students the work of Jim Dine. While they love his tools and his hearts, his bathrobes are a more difficult sell. Yet, all his pieces lead to a good amount of discussion, and we practice different methods of expressive drawing after seeing Dine’s examples. Adding that expression on top of the realism leads to interesting, successful drawings that the students really enjoy creating.
